Origin: An imitative or expressive formation.

Etymology: Imitative, from the cry of the bird. Compare tweet int., twit int., and also weet int. and sweet v.²

1. A small finch with pinkish brown plumage, Linaria flavirostris, related to the linnet, breeding in uplands and moors in northern and central Eurasia and often migrating south in winter. Also called mountain linnet.The identification in quot. 1562 is not certain. Eng. Dial. Dict. (1905) treats this as a regional word of northern England, but it is now the usual name for the bird.
