Disease characterized by the formation of tubercles; spec. that caused in humans by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the characteristic lesion of which is a caseating granuloma. Frequently with distinguishing word indicating the site or stage of infection, method of transmission, etc. In later use also: disease caused by other mycobacteria (in a variety of species).
