Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Tuberculosis.
Etymology: < German †Tuberculosis (1830 or earlier, often attributed to J. L. Schönlein; now Tuberculose or (usually) Tuberkulose ) < classical Latin tūberculum tubercle n. + scientific Latin -osis -osis suffix.
Disease characterized by the formation of tubercles; spec. that caused in humans by infection with the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the characteristic lesion of which is a caseating granuloma. Frequently with distinguishing word indicating the site or stage of infection, method of transmission, etc. In later use also: disease caused by other mycobacteria (in a variety of species). Abbreviated T.B.Tuberculosis most commonly affects the lungs and adjacent lymph nodes (in which it is often self-limited), but it may affect most organs of the body. It is accompanied by systemic symptoms of fever, sweats, and weight loss, and may be progressive and fatal if untreated. It is usually transmitted by inhalation of droplets of infected sputum.Earlier names for the disease include consumption and phthisis.avian, bovine, inoculation, miliary tuberculosis: see the first element.
