Origin: Partly a borrowing from German. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: German Metaxin ; Greek μεταξύ , -in suffix1.
Etymology: In sense 1 < German Metaxin (F. Schwartz 1887, in Beiträge zur Biol. der Pflanzen 5 9) < ancient Greek μεταξύ between (probably < μετά (see meta- prefix) + ξύν : see syn- prefix) + German -in -in suffix1. In sense 2 independently < ancient Greek μεταξύ + -in suffix1.
