Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: train v.1, -age suffix.
Etymology: < train v.1 + -age suffix, originally after French traînage action of drawing something along (1611 in Cotgrave: see quot. 1611; 1531 in Middle French as traisnage; already 1400 as tregnaiges (plural noun) in sense ‘feudal tax payable on goods being brought into a town’).
Now rare.
(a) The action of drawing something along; the fact of being drawn along, esp. by traineau or sledge; haulage or conveyance by traineau or train; (b) a road or way for this (obsolete).
