unnutadj.

Forms: Old English onnitt (rare), Old English onnytt (rare), Old English unit (rare), Old English unyt (rare), Old English (Kentish)–early Middle English unnet, Old English (Kentish)–early Middle English unnett, Old English (chiefly late)–early Middle English unnit, Old English–early Middle English unnyt, Old English–early Middle English unnytt, early Middle English unnitte, early Middle English unnnitt ( Ormulum), early Middle English unnud, early Middle English unnut, early Middle English unnutte, early Middle English vnned, early Middle English vnnet, early Middle English vnnnitt ( Ormulum), early Middle English vnnut, early Middle English vnnvwt (perhaps transmission error).
Origin: A word inherited from Germanic.
Etymology: Cognate with or formed similarly to Old Frisian unnette , unnet , unnutte , unnut (West Frisian ûnnut ), Middle Dutch onnutte , onnut (Dutch onnut ), Middle Low German unnutte , Old High German unnuzze , unnuzzi (Middle High German unnutze , unnütze , German unnütz ), Gothic unnuts < the Germanic base of un- prefix1 + the Germanic base of nut adj.1 Compare unnut n.Old English forms with stem vowel e in the base are Kentish in origin, showing typical unrounding and lowering of y (see A. Campbell Old Eng. Gram. (1959) §288); similar forms in Middle English represent reflexes of these, although some examples (especially in western sources) may result from reduced stress (the primary stress would have fallen on the prefix). Forms with stem vowel i in the base show unrounding of y, characteristic (in Middle English) of the east midlands and north.
Obsolete.
Useless, worthless, unprofitable, vain.
