Etymology: < tragedy n. + -ical suffix. Compare ancient Greek τραγῳδικός befitting a tragic poet or tragedy ( < τραγῳδία tragedy n. + -ικός -ic suffix) + -al suffix1, and also post-classical Latin tragedicus (13th cent. in British sources), Middle French tragedicque (c1380 and 1546 in two apparently isolated attestations; French tragédique subsequently from 1862 in sense ‘(of a person) who likes tragedies’), Italian †tragedico characteristic of tragedies (a1292), (of an author) that writes tragedies (14th cent.).Apparently re-formed in the late 19th cent.
