Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin aegithus , -gnathous comb. form; Greek αἴγιθος , -gnathous comb. form.
Etymology: < classical Latin aegithus, small bird, perhaps the blue tit, or its etymon ancient Greek αἴγιθος, a kind of small bird, of unknown origin + -gnathous comb. form (compare -o- connective).
Chiefly Ornithology.
Designating a conformation of the bones of the palate typical of passerine birds, with the maxillopalatines separate and the vomer broad and truncated at the front (see quot. 1894); exhibiting such a palatal structure, which is found also in woodpeckers and swifts (formerly grouped with passerines in a division called Aegithognathae).

1867 T. H. Huxley in Proc. Zool. Soc. 425 In this order [sc. Carinatæ] the bones which enter into the formation of the palate are disposed in four different modes, which may be called respectively the Dromæognathous, Schizognathous, Desmognathous, and Ægithognathous arrangement.
1894 R. B. Sharpe Hand-bk. Birds Great Brit. I. 1 The palate is said to be ‘ægithognathous’, or ‘Passerine’, when the vomer is broadened and blunt, or truncated, at the anterior end, and is not connected with the maxillo-palatines, which, consequently, are widely separated from each other.
