Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; partly modelled on a Greek lexical item, and partly modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: town n., English -ikin , -kin suffix.
Etymology: < town n. + -ikin, variant of -kin suffix, after diminutives of the words for ‘town’ in other languages. Compare earlier townlet n.In quot. a1813 after ancient Greek πολίχνη, diminutive of πόλις city (see polis n.2). The work quoted in quot. 1864 cites the German word Dörfchen little village (glossed as ‘Thorpkin’) with reference to the same place; compare also German Städtchen, (regional: south) Städtle , diminutives of Stadt town (see shtetl n.).
