Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Tom Putt.
Etymology: < the name of Tom Putt, the originator of the variety, either the Rev. Thomas Putt, rector of Trent, Somerset (now in Dorset) from 1802 to c1835, or his uncle, Sir Thomas Putt of Combe House, Gittisham, Devon (died 1787).
A variety of apple with a scarlet striped and flushed fruit, originating in south-west England and formerly widely grown, mainly for cider; an apple of this variety. Also (with distinguishing word): any of several similar varieties of apple (now rare).
