Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: French tainture ; attainture n.
Etymology: In Branch I. < Middle French tainture colouring matter (12th cent. in Old French), action of dyeing (13th cent.; French teinture) < classical Latin tinctūra action of dyeing (see tincture n.). In Branch II. aphetic < attainture n.With sense 2 compare taint v. II.
Now rare.
