Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name St Bridget of Sweden , -ine suffix1.
Etymology: < the name of St Bridget of Sweden (1303–73), Swedish mystic, who founded the order in 1344 + -ine suffix1, after the names of other religious orders (e.g. Benedictine adj., Augustine adj.). Compare Swedish Birgittiner, noun (1761 as Brigittiner), birgittinsk, adjective (1776 as brigittinsk). The variants of this word reflect variation of the form of the saint's name in English, compare e.g. (with the α. forms) Brigitta (15th cent. as Brigitt ), (with the β. forms) Bridget (15th cent. as Briget ), (with the γ. forms) †Brigide (16th cent.: see below), and (with the δ. forms) †Birgit (16th cent.); these in turn reflect forms of her name in other languages, especially in post-classical Latin (e.g. Brigitta ) and in Swedish (e.g. Old Swedish Birgitte , Swedish Birgitta , †Brigitta ). St Bridget of Sweden was herself named after St Brigid of Kildare (Early Irish Brigid , Irish Bríd ), a semi-legendary Irish saint said to have lived in the 5th–6th cent., and for whom the English form Bridget has also been used since the 16th cent.; earlier forms of her name in English are Brigid (in Old English as Brigida ) and Bride (in Old English as Bridæ ), respectively reflecting Early Irish spelling and pronunciation. Both forms are also sometimes used in English for St Bridget of Sweden; compare the γ. forms and also the following passage (with reference to the Bridgettine order):a1464 J. Capgrave Abbreuiacion of Cron. (Cambr. Gg.4.12) (1983) 242 The þird is of Seynt Bride ordir: þei haue Seynt Austyn reule, with certeyn additamentis. In the form Brigitting at α. forms probably with remodelling of the suffix after -ing suffix3. In the form Brigidian at γ. forms with remodelling of the suffix after -ian suffix.
