Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bread n., tree n.
Etymology: < bread n. + tree n.In the specific South African use (e.g. in quot. 1786) after South African Dutch broodboom (late 18th cent. or earlier in this sense; Afrikaans broodboom).
Either of two cycads of the genus Encephalartos (family Zamiaceae), E. altensteinii and E. longifolius, which are native to South Africa and contain starchy pith used to produce a breadlike food. Also more widely: any of various trees having nuts, fruit, pith, etc., used as a source of food. Occasionally with distinguishing word. Kaffir bread tree, St John's bread tree: see the first element.
