Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Italian mancando, mancare.
Etymology: < Italian mancando lacking, failing, decreasing, present participle of mancare to lack, fail, fall short, decrease (see manqué adj.). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the non-naturalized pronunciation (maŋka·ndo) /maŋˈkando/.
Music.
Esp. as a musical direction: becoming even softer; dying away. Cf. diminuendo n.
