Etymology: < man n.1 + boot n.1 Compare Old Icelandic manns-bœtr (plural) wergild, manbot. Compare post-classical Latin manbota (12th cent.), from the Old English word and perhaps the immediate source of some later uses in English, and Old French mainbote, manbote (late 11th cent.), either from Old English or from an unattested Frankish source.Because the word has been limited to historical use since the Old English period it has retained an archaic spelling.
Anglo-Saxon Law. Now historical.
A fine to be paid to an overlord as compensation for the killing of a man under his authority.
