Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin āerius.
Etymology: < classical Latin āerius (see aerial adj.), although most early examples of α. forms could alternatively be interpreted as showing airy adj. Compare Middle French, French †ayré, airé aerial, airy (a1506), Middle French, French aéré where the air circulates freely (1398), of the nature of the air (1503), which lives in the air (1570).
Chiefly poetic and literary in later use.
Of or belonging to the air; aerial; (hence) ethereal, spiritual, incorporeal, insubstantial. Also: open to the air. Cf. airy adj.
