Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Partly formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bridal n.; bride n.1, ale n.
Etymology: Originally (i) a variant of bridal n., with change of spelling after the original etymons bride n.1 and ale n. (compare the β. forms and discussion at bridal n.), now usually distinguished in form in sense 1. In later use (ii) (in sense 2) directly < bride n.1 + ale n. Compare earlier church ale n.In the 19th-cent. form bridale (in quot. a1861 at sense 1 in a historical context) apparently reflecting awareness of the historical link with bridal n. (compare discussion at that entry).
1. A wedding banquet or feast; (in later use) spec. a medieval or early modern communal wedding celebration, typically involving ale drinking. Now archaic and historical.Only post-medieval uses of forms beginning bride-, bryde-, etc., are treated here. For earlier use of forms such as Old English brydealo, Middle English bredeale, see bridal n., of which this word was originally a variant (see etymology).
