单词 bracken
释义

brackenn.1

Brit. /ˈbrak(ə)n/, U.S. /ˈbrækən/
Forms: Also Middle English–1800s braken, Middle English brakan, bracon, 1600s braking, breccan, 1700s brachen (Scottish), 1700s–1800s breckan (Scottish), breckon (northern dialect).
Etymology: Middle English (northern) braken, apparently representing an Old Norse *brakni, whence Swedish bräken, Danish bregne ‘fern’ (? and, by corruption, Icelandic burkni ‘common fern’.) The alleged Old English bracce weak feminine is merely a guess of Cockayne's ( Saxon Leechdoms III. 315) from the place-name Braccanheal Bracknell (which may possibly be from a personal name Bracca). It could not, in any case, be the predecessor of Middle English braken . Compare brake n.1, brack n.4
a. A fern; spec. (in modern writers) Pteris aquilina, the ‘Brake’. (In the north all large ferns are brackens; Pteris aquilina is merely the most conspicuous and best known, from the masses in which it grows.) Southern writers often make bracken collective. Also attributive.
