Origin: Either (i) a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Or (ii) formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: tingle-tangle n.1, tinkle v.1; tinkle n.
Etymology: Either (i) an alteration of tingle-tangle n.1, after tinkle v.1, or (ii) a reduplication with vowel variation of tinkle n. (although this is first attested slightly later). Compare earlier tinkle-tankling n.
A sharp light ringing sound, esp. one forming part of a succession of such sounds. Also: a resonating sound of another kind, esp. that of a stringed musical instrument. Also (and in earliest use) as a modifier. Cf. tinkle n. 1b.
