单词 time ball
释义

time balln.

Brit. /ˈtʌɪm bɔːl/, U.S. /ˈtaɪm ˌbɔl/, /ˈtaɪm ˌbɑl/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: time n., ball n.1
Etymology: < time n. + ball n.1
Now chiefly historical.
A ball mounted on a vertical rod or pole in a prominent location (typically the top of a tower), down which it is dropped at a predetermined time, thereby providing a precise time signal that may be seen from a distance. The time-ball was devised by Robert Wauchope (1788–1862), Scottish naval officer, as a means of facilitating accurate adjustment of chronometers on board ship; an experimental apparatus was set up at Portsmouth in 1829, and this was followed in 1833 by a permanent installation at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich. Use of this system for maintaining accurate timekeeping declined following the introduction of radio time signals.
