Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English *offretan.

Etymology: Probably the reflex of an unattested Old English strong verb *offretan ( < of- prefix + fret v.¹; compare the weak verb offrettan : see note), with reduction of the prefix (compare a- prefix⁴). Compare later affret v. and afret adj.Old English *offretan represents a strong verb of Class V; whether distinctively strong past tense forms survived into Middle English is unknown, as no past tense forms are attested (however, compare the strong past participle afrete ); in the south-west midlands the verb was apparently assigned to the reflex of the weak Class II conjugation (see α. forms). Compare the Old English weak Class I verb offrettan to eat up, devour (one isolated attestation; < of- prefix + Old English frettan to eat up, devour: see fret v.¹):OE (Northumbrian) Lindisf.
