释义

Throp's wifen.

Brit. /ˌθrɒps ˈwʌɪf/, U.S. /ˌθrɑps ˈwaɪf/
Forms:

Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Throp , wife n.
Etymology: Originally (in α. forms) < the genitive of the surname Throp (variant of Thorp : compare thorp n.) + wife n.Apparently alluding to a proverbial character, of unclear identity. Perhaps Margaret Thorp, wife of Ralph Thorp of Fewston, Yorkshire, who together with her mother and four other women (subsequently known as the Timble Gill witches), was accused of numerous counts of witchcraft by Edward Fairfax and tried at York Assizes in April and August 1622. She is referred to throughout his written account of the affair as ‘Thorp's wife’; compare e.g.:a1635 E. Fairfax Discourse of Witchcraft (1858) 254 Elizabeth saw Thorp's wife, who put her finger in her mouth, and so caused her to spit a great deal of blood.
Chiefly English regional (northern).
A proverbially busy person. Chiefly in as thrang (also throng) as Throp's wife (when she hanged herself with the dishclout) and variants. Cf. throng adj. 6.
