A pungent-smelling, crystalline terpenoid alcohol present in Borneo camphor, of which it is the main constituent, and in volatile oils obtained from many other plants.Chemical name: 1,7,7-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-ol, C10H18O. Cf. isoborneol n. at iso- comb. form 2b. ΚΠ 1843 Chem. Gaz. 1 Mar. 230 It takes up the elements of 2 atoms of water, and is converted into a crystalline camphor, which has all the properties of the solid Borneo camphor... For this reason the author [sc. M. Gerhardt] applies to the carburetted hydrogen of the valerian oil the name of Bornéen, and to the camphor that of Borneol. 1922 J. J. Sudborough Bernthsen's Text-bk. Org. Chem.
