Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French diable au corps.
Etymology: < French diable au corps (last quarter of the 14th cent. or earlier, frequently in avoir le diable au corps ; see also note below), lit. ‘devil in the body’ < diable devil (see devil n.; compare devil n. 5b) + au , contracted form of à le (see alantom adv.) + corps body (see corpse n.).With the French phrase, compare Old French deable el cors (mid 12th cent.), in the same sense, which shows el ( < en in + le the) as its second element. Compare also the following earlier occurrence of the French phrase in an English context:1778 G. Ellis Poet. Tales 24 The pigs that jump'd into the water, The pigs that had ‘le diable au corps’. O.E.D. Suppl. (1972) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (dyabl o kǭr) /djɑbl o kɔr/.
