Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin discipulus , -ize suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin discipulus disciple n. + -ize suffix. Compare slightly earlier disciple v. 3.Chiefly with allusion to Matthew 28:19: ‘Go ye therefore, and make disciples of all the nations’ (Revised Version), rendering Hellenistic Greek μαθητεύειν (see note at disciple v.).
Obsolete.
transitive. To make (a person) into a disciple; to convert. Also intransitive. Cf. disciple v. 3.
