Etymology: < tele- comb. form + phonography n. In sense 2 after telephonograph n. (compare also phonography n. 4).

1. A system for signalling over long distances by means of loud tones produced by instruments such as a steam whistle. Obsolete.This system was proposed by U.S. doctor John Baxter Upham.

1863 Jrnl. Soc. Arts 22 May 464/1 Telephonography is the word which Dr. J. B. Upham..applies to a system of signalling by sound, which for some months he has been engaged in bringing to a form for practical use in the army and navy.
