Etymology: < post-classical Latin aliturgesia exemption from public office (1664 or earlier; 1552 or earlier as oliturgesia) < Hellenistic Greek ἀλειτουργησία < ancient Greek ἀ- a- prefix6 + λειτουργεῖν to fill a public charge (see liturgy n.) + -σία -sy suffix1.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
An exemption from a public office or duty. Cf. liturgy n. 3.
