Etymology: < tank n.1 + top n.1With sense 2 compare tank suit n. at tank n.1 Compounds 2; perhaps originally with reference to its resemblance to swimwear (compare quot. 19492 at sense 2).
1. The top or lid of a tank (in various senses); spec. (Shipbuilding) the top of the lowermost ballast tank, forming the floor of the hold of a ship. Hence also colloquial, with the: the lowest deck of a ship.
