Forms: Also 1700s–1800s taanle, tawnle, 1800s taunle, tannel.
Origin: Perhaps a borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse tandr.
Etymology: perhaps an altered form of Old Norse tandr, tandri fire = Old High German zantaro, zantro, Middle High German zanter, zander: but the history is incomplete.
Scottish and northern dialect.
A large fire in the open air, a bonfire; esp. one made at certain seasons in the year, as on May Day, Midsummer Eve, or the first of November.
