Compare Old Occitan sotileza astuteness, skill, subtileza ingenuity (both 13th cent.), Catalan subtilesa (13th cent.), Italian sottilezza craftiness, cunning (14th cent.), (with alteration after sottigliare subtle v.) sottigliezza astuteness (a1274), craftiness, cunning (a1338). Compare earlier subtility n. 1a, subtlety n. 3b, and subtleness n., and slightly later subtileness n. 2.
