Etymology: Partly (in sense 1) < French tante sister of one's father or mother, aunt (c1200 in Old French; alteration, reflecting childish speech, of ante (c1145) < classical Latin amita : see aunt n.), probably partly via German Tante (18th cent.); and partly (in sense 2) < Afrikaans tante < Dutch tante (1735) < French tante . Compare aunt n.
