Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin synergia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin synergia cooperation (1554 or earlier in a theological context, 1695 or earlier in a medical context) < ancient Greek συνεργία cooperation < συνεργός working together ( < συν- syn- prefix + -εργος : see -ergic suffix) + -ία -ia suffix1. In early use in both senses immediately after French synergie (1778 in physiology, 1896 in cultural anthropology in the passage translated in quot. 1897 at sense 2: see synergy n.). Compare earlier synergy n.

The first, or physiological, consists in an agreement of motor tendencies, a synergia [Fr. synergie]; the second, or psychological, consists in an agreement of the emotional states, a synæsthesia; the third, or intellectual, results from a community of representations or ideas.
