Etymology: < late Latin symmysta (Jerome), medieval Latin symmista, symmystēs (Apuleius), colleague in the priesthood, < Greek συμμύστης fellow-initiate, < σύν sym- prefix + μύστης one initiated into mysteries: compare myst n. The unetymological but more frequent spelling with i , already found in medieval Latin, is due to association with words in -ist suffix.
Obsolete.
(a) An associate in a ‘mystery’, i.e. a secret belief or practice; a fellow-initiate. (b) A colleague in a sacred office.
