单词 church grith
释义

church grithn.

Brit. /ˈtʃəːtʃ ɡrɪθ/, U.S. /ˈtʃərtʃ ˌɡrɪθ/
Forms: see church n.1 and adj. and grith n.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on an early Scandinavian lexical item. Etymons: church n.1, grith n.
Etymology: < church n.1 + grith n., probably after early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic kirkjugrið, plural). In Old English the word cyricgriþ is not attested earlier than the 11th cent. (quot. OE1 apparently represents a later interpolation in the 10th-cent. Laws of Edgar); it occurs repeatedly in the works of Wulfstan, Archbishop of York, and in legal sources having specific reference to Northumbrian laws. Compare Old English cyricfriþ , in the same sense ( < church n.1 + frith n.1), which is attested earlier and may have in its turn served as model for the early Scandinavian.
Anglo-Saxon Law. Now historical.
Security, peace, or protection guaranteed within a church or its precincts; the right of sanctuary. Cf. grith n. 2.
