Etymology: < post-classical Latin sustentaculum (see sustentaculum n.); compare -cle suffix. Compare Middle French sustentacle, soustentacle support, supporting structure (c1435–70), Italian sostentacolo (15th cent.). N.E.D. (1918) gives the pronunciation as (sɒ̆ste·ntăk'l) /səˈstɛntək(ə)l/.
