Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; modelled on a German lexical item. Probably also partly a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin botulus , -in suffix1, -ic suffix; Latin botulinus , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin botulus sausage (see botulism n.) + -in suffix1 + -ic suffix, after German Wurstfettsäure ( J. A. Buchner Toxikologie (ed. 2, 1827) 141). Compare later botulin n., botulinum n. In sense 2 probably re-formed < scientific Latin botulinus (see botulinum n.) +-ic suffix.
1. botulinic acid n. Obsolete a (supposed) fatty acid believed to be responsible for the symptoms of food poisoning occurring after the consumption of sausages and similar meat products.
