Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin superfluentia ; superfluent adj., -ence suffix.
Etymology: Partly (i) (in sense 1) < post-classical Latin superfluentia necrotic flesh, or the process of producing this (1363 in Chauliac), also fact or quality of being overflowing (1542 in a British source) < classical Latin superfluent- , superfluēns , present participle of superfluere (see superflue adj.) + -ia -ia suffix1; and partly (ii) < superfluent adj.: see -ence suffix. Compare Middle French superfluence overabundance of bodily humours (1485), excellence (of Christ) (1599 in a theological context). Compare earlier superfluity n.
