Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymon: summoner n.
Etymology: Variant of summoner n., assimilated to summond v. or its Anglo-Norman etymon.Early uses as surname, as e.g. quot. c1346, could alternatively reflect an Anglo-Norman form, although forms of the noun with -d- are not otherwise attested in Anglo-Norman.
Scottish and English regional (northern). Obsolete.
A minor officer who notifies a person to appear in court (esp. an ecclesiastical court); = summoner n. 2.Recorded earliest as a surname.
