单词 bowtell
释义

bowtelln.

Brit. /ˈbəʊtɛl/, U.S. /ˈboʊˌtɛl/
Forms: Middle English–1500s 1700s– bowtell, Middle English 1800s– bowtel, 1500s–1600s boltell, 1500s 1700s–1800s boltel, 1600s bottle, 1600s boultel, 1600s boultle, 1700s boultin, 1700s boultine, 1800s boutel, 1800s boutell.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: bolt n.1, -el suffix2.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps < bolt n.1 + -el suffix2, with allusion to the similarity in shape between the shaft of an arrow or bolt and a convex moulding. It has alternatively been suggested that this word may represent a borrowing of Anglo-Norman botel , botelle , Anglo-Norman and Middle French boutelle , bouteille bottle n.3, although evidence for use of this word in architecture is lacking (the usual word for this kind of moulding in Middle French was bozel , bocel , which is etymologically unrelated). Later forms such as bottle show remodelling by association with bottle n.3
Architecture.
In stonework: a plain convex moulding; (also occasionally) a shaft forming part of a clustered pillar. Cf. torus n. 1.
