Etymology: < scientific Latin Sus, genus name ( Linnaeus Systema Naturae (ed. 10, 1758) I. 49; < classical Latin sūs swine: see sow n.1) + -id suffix3, after scientific Latin Suidae, family name (J. E. Gray 1821, in London Med. Repos. 15 306).
