Origin: Apparently a borrowing from a West African language.
Etymology: Apparently < a West African language (see quot. 1705); compare Akan apɔsɔ . See further J. Platt 1905, in Notes & Queries 10th ser. 4 286. Sense 2 is either a different word independently borrowed < a Caribbean language, or perhaps the result of confusion; compare French †poto (1776 in G. Buffon Hist. nat. (Suppl.) III. 251, where it is reported as a local word), and also scientific Latin Potos, genus name of the kinkajou (E. Geoffroy St-Hilaire & G. Cuvier 1795, in Magasin encyclopédique 2 187).With sense 1a compare the following earlier attestation of the name in a local language:1705 tr. W. Bosman New Descr. Coast of Guinea xiv. 250 A Creature, by the Negroes called Potto [Du. een beest, 'tgeen by de negers de naem van potto draegt], but known to us by the Name of Sluggard.

a. A small, nocturnal, slow-moving primate with a short tail, Perodicticus potto (family Lorisidae), found in tropical African forests where it climbs in dense vegetation. Also Bosman's potto, potto lemur.
