Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese suiboku.
Etymology: < Japanese suiboku (in suibokuga ink-wash painting, < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese shuǐmòhuà).In Japanese, the individual elements are sui- water (see suiseki n.), boku ink, and -ga painting, picture (see manga n.2).
A style of Japanese painting in black ink on a white surface, characterized by bold brushwork and subtle gradations of tone. Frequently as a modifier, as in suiboku painting. Cf. sumi-e n.
