Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French suessonien.
Etymology: < French suessonien ( A. d'Orbigny Cours élémentaire de paléontol. et de géol. stratigraphiques (1849) I. 157) < classical Latin Suessōnēs (also Suessiōnēs ), the name of a Gaulish tribe (probably < a derivative of Gaulish suex- six adj.) + French -ien -ian suffix.Classical Latin Suessōnēs is the etymon of the modern French place name Soissons.
Geology. Now rare or disused.
Designating a stage of the lower Eocene series, exemplified by some sedimentary deposits in southern Europe; of or relating to this stage. Also as n.: this series of rocks, or the period when they were deposited.
