Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French acétone.
Etymology: < French acétone (A. Bussy 1833, in Ann. de chim. et de physique 53 409) < acét - (in acétique acetic adj.) + -one -one suffix. Compare German Aceton (1837 or earlier).
Chemistry.
A colourless, volatile, flammable liquid with a sweetish odour, used as a solvent and cleaning agent (e.g. in nail-varnish remover) and in the synthesis of plastics and other compounds.Acetone is the simplest of the ketones. Systematic name: propanone; CH3COCH3.
