Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French prozoïque.
Etymology: < French prozoïque ( C. A. Rozet Cours élém. de géognosie (1830) 160) < pro- pro- prefix1 + ancient Greek ζωή life (see zoism n.) + French -ique -ic suffix. Compare -zoic comb. form1.
Geology. Now rare.
Designating rocks characterized by an absence of fossils and regarded as having been formed before the emergence of life on earth; of or relating to such rocks or to this period of the earth's history; = azoic adj.
