Etymology: < classical Latin subreptīcius (also surreptīcius; in post-classical Latin also subreptitius, surreptitius) stolen, kidnapped, in post-classical Latin also false, deceitful (5th cent.), taking place by stealth (15th cent. in a British source; < subrept- , past participial stem of subripere (see subreption n.1) + -īcius : see -itious suffix1) + -ous suffix. Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French subreptice (1336; now chiefly in legal contexts), Spanish subrepticio (a1476), Portuguese subrepticio (1688). Compare earlier surreptitious adj.1 and the foreign-language forms cited at that entry.
