Etymology: < post-classical Latin subnotation-, subnotatio signature, note, comment (5th cent.) < classical Latin subnotāt- , past participial stem of subnotāre to sign (documents), to write down at the conclusion of a document, to mark particularly ( < sub sub- prefix + notāre note v.2) + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier notation n.In quot. 1705 at sense 1 with reference to the Liber subnotationum in verba Iuliani, formerly attributed to Marius Mercator (5th cent.).
