Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: eft n.1
Etymology: Variant of eft n.1 (see forms at that entry) with metanalysis (see N n.).For the change of pre-consonantal v to w and subsequent vocalization to u compare hawk n.1 The form neuft (see quots. 1602 at main sense and 1631 at main sense) is difficult to explain.
Any of various small urodele amphibians of the family Salamandridae, having a slender body, a long tail, and lungs, which are typically terrestrial as adults but return to water to breed; esp. any of the common Eurasian genus Triturus. Also (now regional): a lizard. Cf. eft n.1, ask n.2, salamander n. 1b.crested, marbled, palmate, smooth newt: see the first element.
