Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French subérone.

Etymology: < French subérone (1835 or earlier: see below) < suber suber n. + -one -one suffix. Compare German Suberon (1839 or earlier; < French).The substance was first obtained by J.-B. Boussingault, who described it in Comptes rendus hebd. de l'Acad. des Sci. (1836) 2 77–80. In this paper, he called the substance hydrure de subéryle . In a German abstract of the paper ( Ann. der Pharmacie (1836) 19 307–11) the substance is called ‘eine Verbindung des Suberyls mit Wasserstoff (hydrure de subéryle )’. Neither of these papers uses either German Suberon or French subérone . J.-B. Dumas ( Traité de chimie appliquée aux arts (1835) V. 234) reported that Boussingault had obtained suberone, but did not attribute its name to him; quot. 1837 may derive from the French mention by Dumas.

1922 J. J. Sudborough Bernthsen's Text-bk. Org. Chem. (new ed.) xvi. 345 Keto-hexamethylene and keto-heptamethylene or suberone have been obtained by similar methods.

2010 Tetrahedron Lett. 51 3780/1 This compound is not planar, but bulky, analogous to suberone, although there are no large substituents.
