Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin subcingulum, succingulum.
Etymology: < classical Latin subcingulum (also succingulum) garment worn round the loins, in post-classical Latin specifically denoting an ecclesiastical garment (12th cent.) < sub- sub- prefix + cingulum cingulum n. Compare earlier subcingle n., surcingle n., and also succinctorium n.
1. A belt worn below another. Cf. surcingle n. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

1824 S. R. Meyrick Crit. Inq. into Antient Armour III. Gloss. Subcingulum, when one belt was worn below another it was thus called.
2. Christian Church. An ecclesiastical vestment resembling a maniple (maniple n. 1a), worn suspended from the left side of a girdle; (also) the girdle and cloth together, considered as a single garment. Earlier also apparently: a girdle having two pendants or lappets (now historical). Also called subcinctorium, succinctorium (see succinctorium n.), and praecinctorium. Cf. also subcingle n.This garment is now worn exclusively by the Pope at the celebration of the Eucharist, but was formerly also worn by bishops and other priests at the celebration of the Mass.

1844 B. Smith tr. A. W. Pugin Gloss. Eccl. Ornament & Costume 136 The succinctorium, or sash (variously called subcingulum, subcincta, and præcinctorium) was antiently worn by all Bishops, in addition to the girdle. It is now worn by the Pope only.
1876 W. E. Scudamore Notitia Eucharistica 85 Some writers speak of a Succinctorium, Subcingulum, or Succincta, as put on after the Girdle. Literally these words mean an under-girdle; but the Subcingulum was in truth no girdle at all, but a mere appendage to the cingulum.

2002 B. D. Baumgarten Vestments for All Seasons 24/2 Subcingulum, a second girdle developed into a maniple-type cloth that is suspended from the left side of the pope's girdle when he celebrates the Eucharist.
