Origin: Either (i) formed within English, by derivation. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: subvent v.; Latin subvent- , subvenīre , -ive suffix.
Etymology: < subvent v. or its etymon classical Latin subvent-, past participial stem of subvenīre subvene v. + -ive suffix. Compare earlier subvention n.
In early use: †that aids or rescues from harm (obsolete). Later: that gives help or support by subvention, or as a subvention (subvention n. 3).In 19th cent. spec. designating charity in the form of subsidies and relief intended to provide immediate aid to those in need (often opposed to preventive charity, which addressed the causes of deprivation). Now historical.
